Friday 7th Oct.2011 – windsurf( La Franqui) * :( Walk Peyriac) :) Very
windy and sunny periods!!!
Good night at Port-la-Nautique overlooking an Etang under the trees out of
the wind :) Saw a kingfisher while having breakfast then we move off to La
Franqui. Got to the beach at 10 but cloudy cool and only 20 mph wind.
Parked up by the wooden jetty with some French windsurfers but nobody out
yet??? Had tea, wind picked up, rigged 5.8 with falcon 1.80. Pete turned
up and started rigging 6.3m. Walked over to the sea, it didn’t look
good, very choppy and lots of shallow water forming small bays for the
length of the beach:( Tried a run but after about 100m hit the bottom and
crashed really badly breaking a harness line and really hurting my neck.
Also messed up my gps and thought it was broken (it revived later). Went
to get another harness line then walked a mile and a half down the beach
with Peter to where a group of dutch sailors were out. It was a sad sight
with no runs of any length and very bumpy. The other sailors didn’t look
to be going great and said it was choppy and you only had about 400-500m
course. I tried again at the jetty end by sailing between shallow bars and
going for it close to the beach but windy now – 35-40 mph. Not good so
tried the Port Nouvelle side but choppy and gusty and not sure of the depth
close in – crap, crap, crap !!!!!!! Packed up and got of the poxy beach
running over my step ladder in the process :( The moral of the day is never
be first on the water! I am thinking that speed sailing is a complete
waste of time and spoils a good holiday!!!!!!!!!!! It is not my idea of
fun to drive nearly 1000 miles to sail in 500m of choppy shallow water,
shame really when you used to be able to sail at least a mile and a half
close to the beach but sadly those days have gone for the time being.
Perhaps I should stick to long boarding thats much more fun and who cares
if you do 40 knots over a few metres . The day ended up better though when
we took Pete and Gill to our favourite sheltered spot at Peyreic de Mer.
Just dumped the windsurfing gear behind the van, changed the empty gas
bottle and mended my puncture, while Mag got rid of all the sand out of the
van. We had a lovely walk around the small etang seeing loads of flamingos
and even a pair of kingfishers. So who knows what tomorrow will bring –
with my gps seized up it seems pretty pointless going out.
